Cedar Lake appoints Holiday Concepts as its Management Company |
In a letter to members, Denis McGee, Chairman of Cedar Lake Country Club announced the appointment of Holiday Concepts as its management company.
The rational behind the appointment as expressed by the Mr. McGee
"Within the corporate, regulatory and timeshare environment, continuing to manage a club on a stand alone basis has become very challenging. The Board believes that a single manager or couple cannot be expected to possess the range of skills necessary to manage all aspects of the clubs operations. The Board firmly believes that the only way to rectify this unsatisfactory situation is to join a larger group and tap into the range of experience required to run the Club effectively"
Steve Power, Managing Director of the Holiday Concepts Group sees an opportunity for independent Clubs to retain their identity yet benefit from tapping into the range of services and benefits provided by Holiday Concepts. |

New Research Highlights Major Fraud in the UK |
Research published by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in the UK has revealed that consumers lose around £1.2 billion every year to bogus holiday clubs. At the same time £490 million is lost to high-risk investment scams, £420 million to pyramid and get-rich-quick schemes and £260 million to fake foreign lotteries. In all some £3.5 billion is lost to scams every year, said the OFT.
The groundbreaking study into mass marketed scams provides the first ever detailed analysis of the financial impact and harm caused by such scams. The survey – involving over 11,200 interviews – found that nearly half of the UK adult population has been targeted by a scam and that annually one in 15 people (3.2 million adults) fall victim to a scam involving deceptive, unsolicited mailings, phone calls or emails. The average amount lost per scam was £850.
While older consumers were more likely to be targeted by scams, most victims were aged between 35-44 years. Of those who fell for the scams, 32 per cent said it was because of the legitimate and professional appearance of the marketing, 30 per cent said they were caught off guard and 13 per cent because of the excitement at the prospect of getting a good deal or winning a prize.
According to the OFT, the research shows for the first time the full extent of damage done to individuals and the wider UK economy by manipulative and malicious scams.
“The £3.5 billion stolen from the public…… equates to about £70 per year for each adult living in the UK,” said Mike Haley, head of the ‘Scambusters’ team at the OFT. “This research explodes the myth that only the elderly are victims of scams. Young and old, and people from all backgrounds, are taken in by increasingly sophisticated scams.”
Footnote: Commenting on the research, Alberto García (Anfi del Mar), who heads up OTE’s Enforcement Strategy, noted that not a single reference to “timeshare” was made in the study. He also said it was crucial to educate consumers and the media so that they could differentiate between legitimate timeshare products and bogus holiday clubs. OTE Issue 7 |

Surf Life Saving Information |
Here are some tips to help with safety in the surf. It is important as an industry that we support Surf Life Saving Australia and our local Council Life Guards by passing on this important information and at the same time help protect our guests. |
 |
 |
Flags and signage
• Always swim between the red & yellow flag on patrolled beaches
• Always read the Flags and Safety Signs and understand what they mean before entering the water
It is important to read the Flags and Safety Signs and understand what they mean before entering the water.
NEVER
• Swim alone or surf at beaches not patrolled by Lifeguards or Lifesavers
• Bathe outside the red and yellow flags that mark safe areas
• Bathe directly after a meal or under the influence of alcohol
• Bathe when the beach is closed. (Observe the sign "Danger- Reserve closed to bathing" and the red flag)
• Bathe when there are no safety flags
• Panic if caught in a current or undertow, but raise one arm straight up and float until help arrives
• Struggle if seized with a cramp, but raise one arm for help, float and keep the affected part of the body still
• Go out far when a yellow flag is flying- it means the surf is dangerous
• Bathe if unsure of safe conditions, but seek advice of the nearest Lifeguard
• Struggle against a rip or current, but swim diagonally across it
Remember the F-L-A-G-S and stay safe this summer
F Find the flags and swim between them - the red and yellow flags mark the safest place to swim at the beach.
L Look at the safety signs - they help you identify potential dangers and daily conditions at the beach.
A Ask a surf lifesaver for some good advice - surf conditions can change quickly so talk to a surf lifesaver or lifeguard before entering the water.
G Get a friend to swim with you - so you can look out for each other's safety and get help if needed. Children should always be supervised by an adult.
S Stick your hand up for help - if you get into trouble in the water, stay calm, raise your arm to signal for help. Float with a current or rip - don't try and swim against it.
Rips - What is a rip?
A rip is a strong current of water running out to sea. They are formed by a build up of water washing onto the beach, which needs to find its way back out to sea. The force of water forms a channel called a rip. Rips are a major cause of swimmer difficulties.
Common signs of a rip are:
• Discoloured brown water due to sand that has been stirred off the bottom.
• Foam on the surface extending beyond the break
• Waves breaking further out on both sides of the rip
• Debris floating seaward
• A rippled appearance where the surrounding water is generally calm
Types of rips
Permanent - A permanent rip will remain in the same area for months or even years due little change in the sea bottom and prevailing conditions. Permanent fixtures, such as drainage pipes and piers, can also cause rips.
Fixed - A fixed rip can last from hours to months. It is accompanied by a hole or gully in the sand on the sea floor.
Flash - A flash rip will appear suddenly and usually without warning. It is caused by a large build up of water in a short period of time. The outward pull is ussually intense and short lived.
Travelling - A travelling rip moves along a beach propelled by a strong current from the shore.
What to do if you are caught in a rip
• Remain calm and tread water with the rip out from the beach - do not try to swim against the rip.
• Raise one hand straight up in the air to signal for assistance
• Remain calm and wait for a lifesaver
• If you are a strong swimmer - swim parallel to the shore for 30 - 40 metres and then return to the shore where the waves are breaking
