HOME GROWN - World's best fly in for ATHOC annual conference

Timeshare Tourism heavy weights from around the globe descended on Denarau Island in Fiji for the Australian Timeshare Industry’s Annual Conference and Awards. The Progressing Together in the Pacific conference brought together more than 130 from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, China, Singapore, the United States and Canada to discuss current issues being faced in the Timeshare industry.

“The speakers chosen were industry and opinion leaders from across the globe so that the delegates were entertained, informed and able to take plenty back to their business and organisations,” said ATHOC General Manager, Laura Younger.

A standout of the many keynote speakers at the conference was Mr Graeme Bowman. Graeme spoke under the guise of an industry expert and took the audience with him on a hilarious journey that showed on the faces of the audience the 'expert's' credibility gets stretched to breaking point. Graeme Bowman is also a certified Lateral Thinking Trainer, accredited by the De Bono Institute, and was highly entertaining with his keynote address, ‘How to Suck Great Ideas out of Your Head', which hones in on the attitudes and skills needed to create innovative ideas – the sort of ideas that save money and make money.

Special congratulations go to ATHOC award winners Denise Price from Classic Holidays who received the National Award for Professionalism and Andrew Heslehurst from RCI receiving the National Recognition Award. Charisse Cox, MD Group RCI Pacific was presented with the Outstanding Service to the Fiji Timeshare Association, and the NZHOC Recognition Award for 2008 was presented to Hilary MacLeod in belated recognition of his enormous contribution to the NZ timeshare industry in the I980’s and early 1990’s.

The conference was a huge success overall with the next to be held on the beautiful Gold Coast in Australia, on Sunday 13, Monday 14, and Tuesday 15th September, 2009. Make sure you put the date into your diary.

HOME GROWN: Renovation Wrap at Wyndham Vacation Resorts

Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Sydney recently completed extensive renovations culminating in a property wide revamp with, a brand new lobby and several luxuriously opulent Sky and Presidential Suites on the top two floors. Boasting rooftop spas and unparalleled central Sydney views, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Sydney is now, more than ever, the ultimate urban vacation ownership resort.

One of the more radical renovations has seen Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Seven Mile Beach turn into an architectural feast of organic buildings, private zones, and community spaces. The existing apartments have been complemented by new accommodation options ranging from enticing one-bedroom units through to magnificent three-bedroom Presidential Apartments. Replete with a new reception, two new spas, new playground, new guest lounge with integrated BBQ area and an upgraded gym and pool complex, the resort is completed by extensive native landscaping, showcasing indigenous food plants.

Whilst not a renovation, our newest development, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Coffs Harbour is also well underway. With the foundations down, the innovative low-rise tower structure taking shape and the resort’s first prototype unit now complete, the property certainly has heads turning. When completed in August 2009, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Coffs Harbour will be the first purpose-built vacation ownership property since Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Kirra Beach.

WORLD AROUND US: Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Launches First Ski Destination

Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific has continued its rapid growth throughout Asia Pacific following the launch of the newly developed Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Wanaka on New Zealand’s South Island.

The brand new deluxe apartments, purpose built for WorldMark South Pacific Club by Wyndham Owners, have been constructed adjacent to Mt. Aspiring Hotel, Lake Wanaka, itself managed by Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific.

According to the company’s CEO, Barry Robinson, the hybrid model of offering accommodation for both WorldMark South Pacific Club Owners as well as the general public is the key to its rapid growth.

“We have evolved the traditional timeshare concept into the much more flexible Vacation Ownership concept where members can use Credits purchased to holiday at any one of our now 18 resorts across the South Pacific region,” Mr. Robinson said.

“That, combined with our hybrid approach, where we also offer hotel rooms and suites to the general public, means we have two revenue streams which protect us from industry fluctuations. It’s a very robust business model.”

Mr. Robinson said that while some competitors’ development portfolios were being devalued, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific continued to remain highly active as a resort development and management company.

The Wanaka resort is only 40 minutes from the world-class ski resorts of Treble Cone and Cardrona and provides WorldMark South Pacific Club’s Owners with access to the company’s first ski destination. It is also only a short walk from the pristine shores of Lake Wanaka and only two minutes from Lake Wanaka village and a one hour drive from Queenstown..

“Strategically, the Wanaka region fits our portfolio perfectly. It provides us with our first ski destination in the South Pacific region yet it is also famous as a year-round adventure destination,” Mr. Robinson said.

The resort offers a range of studio, one, two and three bedroom luxury apartments as well as a gymnasium, heated pool with water slide, spa pool, steam room and the fully refurbished Rafters Restaurant and Bar.

BUSINESS: Special Alert - Award Modernisation

HMAA - Workplace Relations Bulletin - No.19
The award modernisation process involves the creation of a system of modern awards to operate in conjunction with the new Federal workplace relations system foreshadowed for January 2010. Through this process current awards and NAPSAs used by accommodation operators trading as constitutional corporations in all States and Territories will be replaced with a new federal award.

AIRC Statement - Friday, 12 September 2008

The AIRC has released a statement which deals with award modernisation and in particular the exposure drafts of the priority modern awards.

In summary, the Commission has decided that a single new award - the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2010 - will cover all businesses and employees in Australia's accommodation industry (including hotels, motels, resorts and many others), pubs, taverns, cafes and restaurants (and potentially also licensed clubs) from 2010. The decision can be found by clicking here.

The decision is very disappointing considering the substantial written and oral submissions provided to the Commission by the HMAA seeking for accommodation business to be treated as a separate industry from businesses engaged in the sale of liquor, gaming and/or food. In its statement the AIRC said:

We have drafted a single award for the hospitality industry, although we have deferred consideration of whether licensed and registered clubs and off-shore island resorts should be included within the scope of that award. With those exceptions, which we address later, we have reached the provisional view that the nature of work in the hospitality industry and the terms and conditions of employment in federal awards and NAPSAs do not provide any insurmountable obstacle to the making of a single modern award, being a safety net, in the hospitality industry. There are some differences in the relevant awards' terms and conditions, but they are not so great as to require the making of a series of separate modern awards for the various sectors of the industry. We are optimistic that the practical impact of changed safety net conditions for some employers and employees can be addressed through appropriate transitional arrangements.

Draft New Award

The "exposure draft" of the new award in no way proposes a modern award. The award is written in historical terms, does not address the specific needs of the accommodation sector, does not address historical inconsistencies or problems with interpretations, and will have a dramatic effect on many operators in terms of early start / late work allowances, weekend penalties and the like. Other cost implications will be in the provision of an extra week's annual leave for shift workers (defined within HIGA as a seven day worker who regularly works on Sundays & Public Holidays) and the inclusion of an unworkable and inflexible provision for part-time employees.

The "exposure draft" of the new award can be found by clicking here.
